Today competition to yet students occurs among private universities in Medan, North Sumatra. Therefore to fully understand what High-school leavers need is badly needed as a basis for making policy. This rssearch is intended to know factors that influence High-school leavers" a private university in Medan, North Sumatera. The population of the research are students of the third year of Senior High School academic year 2001/2002 in North Sumatera. The determination of sample was done in two levels: to determine the schools using stratified random sampling, and to categorize the population, into three groups, they are state senior high school, general senior high school and senior high school that affiliate to religion. The method of determining responder~ts at school level is accidental sampling following four criteria: 1) studects who graduated in academic year 2001/2002, 2) students who go to ucivcrsity ~ralc ademic year 200212003, 3) taking course in one of the private uni\/e:sity in Medan North Sumatra and 4) students who are living with their parents in Medan. The number of the sample is 205 students. Variables could influence High-school leavers amount to 40. The measurement level of the significance of each variable is done by using scale 1 to 7, meaning I is absolutely not important and 7 is vary important Factor analysis using principle component normalizatio;l method is used to determine the numbers of factors. Then, rotation was conducted by using varimax with Kaiser normalization method. The criteria used to determine to which factor a variable is included is the total of the MSA in which its total is greater than 0,50 and minimal loading value is 0,4 (Hair, et. al 1995: 366, 385)ln deciding whether the result of the analysis is good is based on the total of the determination which is based on percentage minimal!^ 63 per cent) and the eigenvalue(minimally one) (Malhotra: 1996: 647, 652).
